Behavioral Assistance

If you are having issues with your birds behavior, or if you just want to learn about some ways to train your bird to perform specific behaviors, PARS is there to help. One of our goals is to keep birds in good homes. To meet this goal, we work with owners to provide them with tools to help alter and work with "problem behaviors".

Parrots-r-4ever Avian Rescue and Sanctuary has 3 members who have completed both sections of Dr. Susan Friedman's Living and Learning with Parrots course on behavior modification. Let us work with you to develop a plan for teaching or resolving problem behaviors that is non-aggressive and helps build stronger relationships. We have over 30 years combined experience in working with parrot behaviors.

We offer assistance with all types of behavior issues but have the most experience with these problems:
  • Biting
  • Screaming
  • Feather Destruction
  • Cage Aggression
  • Phobias
  • "One Person Birds" (The bird is aggressive with or fearful of people who aren't it's "mate".)

We are also happy to help you work on encouraging positive behaviors. We can offer assistance with general training techniques or with the following specific behaviors:

  • Stepping up
  • Permitting petting
  • Unrestrained toenail clipping
  • Encouraging flight
  • Encouraging independent play
  • Positive vocalizations

NOTE: Since behaviors don't exist in a vacuum we will ask you detailed questions about yourself, your bird and the bird's environment. Please be as detailed as possible in your answers and be patient with the process. The wrong advice can make a problem worse and the right thing to do depends on a lot of variables. If you are in the Huntsville or Birmingham metro area, we may even be able to come visit and work with you first hand!

At some point in the future, we hope to begin holding classes that are open to the general public on basic bird care and basic behavior. If you have resources that you would like to donate to assist with this goal, please contact us!
